“Employment Law Update”
by
Emma Tegerdine of Massers
According to a survey carried out by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development,
employees take an average of 8.4 days’ sick leave a year. The annual cost of sickness absence to an employer amounts to around £600 per employee.
Sickness absence is also damaging to businesses due to:
The cost of and problems associated with hiring temporary replacement employees; • Missed deadlines due to a lack of trained, experienced employees; • Lower customer satisfaction levels; • Low morale among colleagues forced to take on extra responsibilities; and • The adverse effect on the employer’s reputation.
Emma will cover the latest updates to help you to understand and manage your organisation.

“Experts from HBJ Gateley Wareing’s top ranked Employment Law team, will provide an employment law update and an HR Surgery.
The Employment law update will focus on 5 key cases from 2010 together with 5 key employment law issues for 2011 that every employer needs to know about including:
- Changes to the law on retirement – will employers still be able to require workers to retire at age 65?
- New rights for agency workers – will agency workers be entitled to be treated the same as permanent staff?
- Disciplinary hearings – do employees have a right to be represented by lawyers?
- Recruitment – can you still use health questionnaires during the recruitment process?
- Redundancy – how to avoid unfair dismissal claims
There will also be an “HR Surgery” where you can ask those HR questions you’ve under “Chatham House Rules” to encourage a free discussion.
Finally, the session will also explain how employers based in Nottinghamshire can obtain free HR and legal advice, and occupational health support, under a government funded pilot scheme until March 2011.
